K Grant Writing Institute
The K Grant Writing Institute is a four-day grant writing workshop designed to teach essential strategies for crafting successful grants that support K43, K01, K23 or K99/R00 awards. The institute is for those eligible and working toward applying for a K Grant.
2026 K Grant Writing Institute
Tuesday 20 October to Friday 23 October | 10-11am CT/ 4-5pm WAT
Virtual sessions will take place daily via Zoom Meeting and will feature expert lectures and discussions with those who have gone through the K Grant process.
Apply by 9 October 5pm CT/ 11pm WAT to be considered. Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis.
This program is for those eligible for and working toward a K grant in 2026/2027. We recommend reading about the deadline, eligibility and requirements for the specific award you are interested in before applying for this institute.
To apply you will need to provide the following:
- Your name, email, degree, and affiliation details
- Questions about your eligibility to apply for a K award
- A specific aims page (Learn more about drafing Specific Aims)
- A biosketch page (Learn more about a Biographical Sketch Common Form)
Those not eligible for K awards will not be accepted. However, you may be eligible for the Grant-o-thon which will take place in spring 2027.

About the K Awards
About the K43: Emerging Global Leader Award
The Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award aims to provide research support and protected time to a research scientist from a LMIC who holds an academic junior faculty position or research scientist appointment at an LMIC academic or research institution. Low-income, lower-middle-income and upper-middle-income countries are included.

About the K01: Research Scientist Development Award - Research & Training
This award provides support and protected time for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. Some NIH Institutes use the K01 for individuals who propose to train in a new field or have had a hiatus in their research career.

About the K23: Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award
This award provides support for the career development of investigators who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research. This mechanism provides support for a three year minimum up to five year period of supervised study and research for clinically trained professionals who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators.

About the K99/R00: Pathway to Independence Award
The NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) is for promising postdoctoral scientists seeking to complete needed, mentored research career development that will facilitate their timely transition to an independent, tenure-track or equivalent, faculty position. The K99/R00 Award provides up to 5 years of grant support consisting of two phases: the Mentored Phase (K99) supports 1-2 years of mentored postdoctoral research training; the Independent Research Phase (R00) is a research project grant for up to 3 years, contingent on the scientist securing an independent, tenure track faculty position.
